Albert Bunoan, leader of the SAS Ai Field Team held the very first meeting of the year with the scholars last Friday, June 10, 2011.He filed the following report:

Meeting was informal. We had to hold it as briefly as possible so that Jonel Leal and Mariella Tacho (from Ambalayat) and Michelle Pera  (from Pula) will still be able to get a ride home. A small problem arises when once the bulk of students and employees have gone home, finding a ride to the far barangays is close to impossible. The cost of chartered transportation (arkila) is about PhP60.00.
  • I opened the meeting by reading the important message of the Scholarship Committee Chairman, VP/Secretary Deacon Tom Buenavista to the scholars.
  • Extended your congratulations to the scholars
  • Field team members Annie, Aleli Mae, Michelle and yours truly talked about what SAS Ai expects from the scholars, the very reason why they are in SAS, team unity and cooperation, discipline, role of the Field Team and more importantly, being grateful to their generous sponsors.
  • Asked them to create their own email accounts and assigned the sophomores to assist the freshmen on this matter.
Louella and Remy did not attend the meeting due to prior commitments.

Other issues and concerns:
  • The freshmen need additional notebooks, specific notebooks required by their teachers. I immediately notified Hely and made arrangements with her.  Payment will be charged to the proceeds from sale of souvenir items.
  • Noel and Louella informed me that they are experiencing some difficulty accommodating the scholars (even in batches) in their computer shop. They only have 5 units available.
  • The immediate need for USBs to be used by the freshmen and the seniors.  I think this will be taken cared of by Jingle.

Due to illness from a hectic travel schedule this report has been delayed.

Sister Virgie and four other members of the Daughters of Isabela traveled to Tagudin on Nov. 12th. It was a visit to remember! The weather cooperated and the Buenavista Family Inn was just terrific! The Kalding was the best we ever tasted.....including Kilawen, kaldereta and Pinapaitan. Lots of fresh fish caught by the local fishermen and straight to the live coals for the Tinuno and to the pot for the Sinigang with camias, salamagi, and manga.

We also had lots of young Buko and fresh off the tree marunggay leaves cooked with with native chicken (tinula)..........and different kinds of seaweeds, not to miss mentioning the various fruits such as, chico, atis, lansones, star apple, pias, salamagi and ripe mangoes and green mangoes.

We even managed to eat Bisukol, adda pataw na nga Laki (real fresh) Bagnet, kilawen nga Bilis and an array of native desserts such as: bibingka, tupig, patupat, kaskaron, pancit malabon, kamoteng kahoy, iniruban and young coconut with ginitaan! Enough with the food...........

The best part was meeting the Field Team with Albert and his Team of smart Women (see photo below)! We were impressed with their knowledge of SAS AI and how adept they were about their responsibilities as the field team, how much they love the scholars and their work and how one can feel that they love what they do when relating their experiences with parents, the scholars and the teachers.

Albert is an excellent leader! Sister Virgie shared her plans with the Team however making sure that the final plans will have to go through the Prez and the Chair of the Scholarship Committee before anything becomes official. Sister Virgie also let the Team know that her plans are pending until the monies come in and until they hear from the Prez.  I am pleased with the Field Team's work and I personally endorse supporting them every which way we can.

Albert took us to the market.............real interesting! What a guy.......reminds me so much of Leonard because he is so pleasant, bright, good looking and easy going!   The church still looks the same since I left Tagudin..........I was sad not to see my grandparents' home because it had been demolished in order to build a courthouse. The Plaza was packed with tricycles, little stalls of goodies, toys and trinkets. There is a gigantic building across the street from the school and the SAS AI banner is proudly standing by the wall that separates the church from the convent.

At any rate, the LaMorena House where I was born was still there and that made me happy. I felt I still am connected with my hometown, Tagudin!  By the way, after we attended the 6:30 a.m. Mass and we left the church, I couldn't find anyone I knew from before............but thanks to five people who came to say hello....Mang Mediong, Nang Salome, Manang Ellen, Auntie Cresing and Tang Rodring Labitoria, her husband (Lorna's Dad)!

Ay Apo! nobody knew me from a can of paint!  My friends were dumbfounded to know the number of successful students/people St. Augustine School (SAS) produced. We read the missionary sister's landmark in Farola and climbed the lighthouse pretending we were the nuns who arrived that beautiful day 100 years ago. I think you will all have a great time at the centennial! Photo below (L-R) Willie, Jessa Lastimosa, Mae, Louella, Virgie, Yvonne, and Albert pose in front of St Augustine Church and the Grotto.

A report from Alfredo J Somera, Local Liaison Officer based in San Juan, La Union and member of the Field Team

To the Members of the Board:

Together with Vicky and Albert, we had conducted a meeting with the 12 scholars at the SAS Covered Gym at 4:00 p.m to 5:00p.m., July 2, 2010.

Among other things we discussed were:
  • The observance of the organization's rules and regulations for school
  • Emphasis on adherence to the SAS Ai Code of Discipline, like in the observance of protocol.
  • All concerns, be it educational or personal must be coursed thru the field team officers Vicky Chua, Albert and Remy.
  • That in no occasion should they by-pass the Field Team.
  • That their usage/utilization of the computer/internet is strictly educational and should they be found using it otherwise would mean cancellation of their privileges on the Internet.
  • We emphasized that going to these websites: Facebook, Friendster, Twitter, MySpace and the like especially for personal reasons is NOT Allowed.
  • We emphasized also their duties, responsibilities and obligations for the schools, classrooms, with SAS Ai should be their primary objective.
On the lighter side, we asked them how do they felt on their first days of school and they said it was just inspiring, exciting and they feel more blessed than the other students considering their benefits they are enjoying as SAS Ai Scholars. Also, we observed that their shyness (during our initial interviews) has already been overcome with self-confidence and a positive attitude.

We asserted to them that not only SAS Ai has great expectations of them but the entire town of Tagudin since they are already well known as the scholars from a prestigious organization. We reminded them also of the importance of maintaining at all times the observance of humility, self-respect and respect toward others.

We encouraged them also to use their time in the Internet to write a few words describing their accomplishments and the results of their scholastic activities on a weekly basis to the BOT.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m. as we were concerned about the safety of the scholars going home.

By the way, I am attaching one photo of the meeting for your file. A little blurred perhaps because it was my personal phone that was used. Our official camera encountered a low bat status. Vicky will share with you also her reports on the meeting. Thanks!

Fred.
