One thing this lady had. She had compassion for the poor and unfortunate young children who, because of their poverty could not aspire for bigger and better things life had to offer. She thought about this situation for a long time. While driving to an appointment to show a property she would go over in her mind the things she would like to do to help these kids. Then it struck her. Why were these kids living in some kind of prison? Who has willed this upon them? Is poverty reason enough not to dream of being free to pursue your dream? Are we to believe that because we are poor we cannot aspire to grow and become the best we can be?
She remembered her own life when she was growing up in the old country. She walked to school sometimes wearing shoes with holes in the soles she could feel the pebbles and tiny rocks push against the soles of her feet. She persevered nevertheless, studying hard and succeeding in her academic pursuits. It was hard work and persistence that saw her through. Why wouldn't these poor kids do the same?
At last the idea came to her. The expression came and rushed boldly into her imagination, "Education is Freedom". The mantra was born. She immediately went to the registrar's office and she and the principal of the school were only too astonished and surprised to hear her proposition. She wanted to fund the schooling of an entire class section of kids going to that school. There may have been 45 or so students. She remained anonymous throughout her sponsorship but she knew in the back of her mind that at least the kids now had and were given a good start.
Ms Virgie Buban is a most successful businesswoman. But in her gentle and soft mannered way you would never suspect it. She is very low key and indeed loves to serve others. She firmly believes in the saying that "to serve is to reign," "To be first one needs to be last." To prove the seriousness of her desire to assist and to be instrumental in helping the poor kids get a good education at St Augustine School, she is spearheading a project that entails the construction of a building to house the SAS Ai Center. Roughly, there will be a floor dedicated to computer systems and peripheral equipment, an office, storerooms, another floor that will serve as a dormitory and a third floor to house the BOT lounge. This building will be situated in the poblacion or town proper and will have its own Bus service extended to the scholars who come from and who live in the Barangays.
This is a modern day fairy tale. Who could have ever imagined anything like this happening to an upstart, public charity organization, such as, SAS Ai? God is good and he has seen to it that one kind and gentle lady in the person of Ms Virgie Buban has come to leave her footprint, legacy, and trademark in collaboration with SAS Ai.
The impact of her generosity, her actions of kindness and consideration will reverberate through time and through the space continuum. She will be immortalized not only in the recounting of this particular fairy tale in the corridors of St Augustine School but in the course of every household's lively conversations of true charity, hope, and love.
