Parties are great, aren't they? You get to meet new people, make new friends, and renew old acquaintances - all at the same time. You get to laugh, you get to drink cocktails and eat good food while expounding on world problems and offering simplistic solutions. People love your one-liners.

There are also those in the party who will go through great lengths to get you recognized by the attending public for deeds that you have accomplished - real or imagined. These promoters will cajole the paparazzi to come by and snap your pictures and they will gladly pose with you.

Sometime in the evening, when things cool off a bit, you begin to wonder what you have done to merit all the attention. You go through a quick inventory:  Was it my contribution of a few hundred dollars to the common cause? Was it my speech on economics that I delivered at the last Barangay tribal meeting? Was it because I am the current president of the Tagudinians of Southern Saudi Arabia? Well, all the possible reasons just seem to converge into one, tangled mess. No matter. Now is not the time to wax philosophical. Enjoy the rest of the party! Why not?

You go home with your wife and as your wife drives the Lexus SUV, you are recounting the events of the evening. It is still not clear to you why you got so much attention from the so-called officers of the association.

In the mail the next day comes your answer.

There is a letter of solicitation from the association.  Yes, there is going to be a grand extravaganza planned to celebrate the anniversary of the Sundials there in Tagudin. Why - these monuments are turning well over 150 years old and by golly it would be a good idea to get everybody worked up so that we can collect contributions to support the grand project of restoring those same sundials to their original and pristine condition. Do we have your attention now?

Well, we need to gather and meet at a very ostentatious place, say, Las Vegas maybe, rent one of the big Del Villagio ballrooms, bring in the Woody Herman Band or the Les Brown Band of Reknown to play for the black and white ball while we recruit candidates for Festival Queen - single or married - it doesn't matter as long as the candidate can raise lots of cash by the first canvassing.

We will also host a golf tournament so that our professionals, i.e., the attorneys, the doctors, the accountants, the nurses, the professors, the dentists, the surgeons, the clergy, the religious, those that are business entrepreneurs can attend.

The letter continues, "We are going to raise so much money. All proceeds will go to the Sundial project."

You are filled with anticipation. You walk on air. Immediately you get on the horn and call your friends. "Hey, we are having a grand reunion extravaganza for the Sundials!" you excitedly announce. "How much will it cost? My goodness that would be peanuts! The thing is that we are doing something for our town and for our sundials." You are sold on the idea...

How did this landslide start? All because of a photo op that included you. You got your picture taken at that party one evening.
